Boiling Glass

Name five things you can boil!

  1. Potatoes

  2. Eggs

  3. Pasta

  4. Corn on the Cob

  5. Fused Glass

We don't suggest you try boiling glass at home as it takes a kiln that reaches temperatures of 1700 degrees Fahrenheit, special glass, tools, and more!

Boiling glass involves heating glass in a kiln to a temperature where it becomes soft/liquid and moves. This process requires careful control of temperature and timing to achieve the desired effects as it is fascinatingly unpredictable!

This unique method lets us create mesmerizing patterns and textures that add depth and character to glass art.

We're still experimenting but here are some photos of our early results. We chose glass that "reacts" so the top of the piece is dark where the reactive colors (blue, green, white) collided and bubbled to the top. We also had some breaks but we know how to prevent those next time!

The back of the piece is fabulous and will now become the top!

The bottom (now the top) of the piece really shows the boil!

Stay tuned to see how we use this in future designs, and for more results.
